Classroom Activity: Crypto-Battle

Data-based AI systems work differently from ” classic” algorithms: Instead of all elements of behavior being fixed by a programmer, the algorithm of a data-based AI system is trained using large amounts of data. This means that the algorithm analyzes and extracts patterns and correlations in the data. Following the training process, the identified correlations serve as the basis for the algorithm’s behavior. Under the motto: Who decodes faster? AI or classic algorithms?”, the students decode a text at this station using different methods that simulate the procedure within the framework of a regular algorithm (fixed, strictly pre-programmed sequence that must be developed by the programmer) and with the help of a learning AI system (learning from sample data).

The activity is carried out in pairs. Each pair receives the following packet of materials:

  • Task “Algo_Stop the thief”,
  • Task “KISys_Halt den Dieb”,
  • Set of algorithm building blocks for the algorithm variant (preferably already cut out) and
  • A poster with the general task
  • Pencil and paper
  • Partition wall (pegboard)
  • Accompanying text
